Geocache Description:

06 September 2021, 12:00 - 14:00

Join us for a paddle-to picnic on Treasure Island on Labor Day!  Officially Osborn Island, and perhaps several other names by this point, this island in the Manasquan River hosts some foliage that is potentially still hiding an ammo can (cache has been archived), a virtual, and now a community celebration event.

The current plan is as follows:

We will bring some hot dogs, hamburgers, and buns, and a method to cook said items.  Additional items will be extremely limited due to space; if you'd like sides, drinks, condiments, other foods, etc., please feel free to bring them.  The grill will be open.  The event is listed as occuring from 12-2, but the likelihood of staying longer is a definite possibility, particularly if the weather cooperates.  There is plenty of opportunity to swim and hang out in the water should you so desire.  Everything that is carried in will need to be carried out, so please take this into account as well.  I will be bringing some trash bags.

Listed parking coordinates are where I have parked in the past, and I have launched kayaks from the beach to head over to the island.  The listing for the virtual mentions several other launch points as well.

Hope to see you there!

A little additional (hopefully helpful) information:

Low tide for Manasquan River is approximately 13:47.  This means it will be ebbing for the paddle out, and flooding for the paddle back, and is therefore the equivalent of walking to school in 12 ft of snow, uphill both ways.  lol  It's a relatively short paddle, and shouldn't be too difficult regardless of the tides.

Safety suggestions:

Aside from wearing a life preserver, I suggest that attendees try to cross in groups to maximize visibility, and to paddle along shore prior to crossing the channel as perpendicularly as possible to minimize time in the channel on a potentially high boat traffic day, similar to below.

It's possible the weather gods may smile on us...
