The unimoggers' Roaring '20s 20-Cache Series is designed to bring you to little-known jewels within our region or to learn a little bit about the events happening during that time. We encourage you to read the complete descriptions so that you will have that "I didn't know that!" moment. Some are short hikes, some are park and grabs, some are lengthy hikes with each cache type presented for your caching enjoyment. They will be published throughout 2020 in no particular order. This one is one that will have you saying "I didn't know that!" and is:
Cache #10: Bambino Hits 60 Home Runs in 1927
"I've never heard a crowd boo a homer but I've heard plenty of boos after a strike-out." - Babe Ruth
And I've always loved baseball, right up until Darryl Strawberry decided to start charging kids $5 for an autograph when he was playing for the SF Giants in the early nineties when I lived in the Bay Area. With his history of addiction and cancer, I now wish him well, although I haven't been to a professional ball game since... But enough about that. Let's talk about the Bambino!
In 1927, George Herman Ruth Jr (Babe Ruth) set the first truly long-term single season home run standard. However, his first Major League home run record was established during the 1919 season when he connected a then unbelievable twenty-nine times with the Boston Red Sox. The 1919 plateau was considered at the time an "unreachable mark" until the following year when the Bambino smashed his own record by going deep fifty-four times — then beat that record just one year later when he went deep fifty-nine times. (And this was LONG before the '80s when corked bats were all the rage.) Anyway, a few seasons passed and the 1920 record seemed safe until 1927, when the Sultan of Swat blasted 60 homers in just 151 games. Yeah, yeah, I know. Get to the point. The coordinates bring you to the entrance of a park with pavilions, playground equipment, and of course, baseball diamonds. The final, once you figure it out is exactly what you'd expect it to be. What do you need to know to get to the final cache? Just a couple of things.
