Geocache Description:

This is one of five caches we have placed for the 2020 Waukesha Winter Janboree. The Janboree’s theme this year is “ADVENTURE AWAITS.” You’re looking for a micro size cache hidden at the site of a former U.S. missile defense base in what is now known as Waukesha's Hillcrest Park. Parking is available in the parking lot at N43 01.421 W88 11.510.

The adventure of "DeFence" goes back to our very first week of geocaching.

In June 2010 we found our first geocache, several miles east in Wauwatosa. The next two caches we attempted to find were both here at this park, one of which was in this EXACT location. Being new geocachers and using only an iPhone, we looked for some time and couldn’t find them. Four days later Mr. Hack found a cache in someone’s front yard. He met the cache owner and they began to share stories. Mr. Hack learned a lot that day about geocaching and got some hints on the two caches in this park. The next day, now equipped with fresh knowledge, we found both caches, our 3rd and 4th finds respectively. The original cache at this location was actually rated a 3 difficulty. We were thrilled to have discovered an interesting hide method for this cache with such a “high” difficulty rating. We recently saw that the original cache at this location was archived so we thought it would be fun to hide a new one here for the Waukesha Janboree.

Also of note is the title of the cache, which is a play on words of both the hide style and also the fact that it is being hidden on the property which was once part of the Nike Missile defense system during the Cold War. Dr. Dolittle put out a series of caches highlighting the 12 locations in the greater Milwaukee area where these former missile bases were located. Recently he asked us to adopt the series. So for us this location has become quite the adventure of learning more about geocaching as well as the history of the Nike missile program.

One last thing – it was here at this location that we took a picture of our geocaching adventures for the first time, the first of over 14,000 geocaching photos. We didn’t post a picture of it though since spoilers are frowned upon. So if a picture is worth a thousand words, that adds up to….
