Geocache Description:

DOUBLE DUTY CACHE FOR TWO SERIES

The unimoggers' Roaring '20s 20-Cache Series is designed to bring you to little-known jewels within our region or to learn a little bit about the events happening during that time. We encourage you to read the complete descriptions so that you will have that "I didn't know that!" moment. Some are short hikes, some are park and grabs, some are lengthy hikes with each cache type presented for your caching enjoyment. They will be published throughout 2020 in no particular order. This one is:

Cache #11: Historic Churleigh Inn (of Roaring 20s and...)

Cache #9: Stroudsburg 20 GeoArt

Churleigh Hall was the late-Victorian summer home of eccentric businessman Samuel Collins, complete with turrets, porches and towers. Whether Collins was a visionary or a conman is still debated, though the number of lawsuits brought against him is suggestive. As his fortunes changed, the mansion was sold, and operated for a while as Churleigh Inn. All that remains today of the building, its stables, and hanging garden are imposing stone steps and an overgrown swimming pool, and a wonderful view over Stroudsburg.

History

Glen Run Nature Preserve was acquired in 2015 and offers 4 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. The nearly 200-acre preserve is located just south of Stroudsburg and the view from Godfrey Ridge provides an excellent view of the city. The ridge also marks a watershed divide: with the northern portion of the preserve located in the McMichael Creek watershed and the southern in the Cherry Creek watershed.

The foundation of this historic Churleigh Inn features as a picturesque lake nestled among the ridges. The preserve is classified as special regulation waters with artificial lure catch and release only.

Founded in 1984, Pocono Heritage Land Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the natural heritage of the Pocono Mountains region by conserving land and inspiring people to care for, enjoy, and explore their natural world.

No motorized vehicles, alcohol, fires, and hunting are allowed at the Glen Run Natural Preserve. This geocache was placed with the permission of the Pocono Heritage Land Trust, including hide style and location, and for that, we thank them.
