Not too far from this cache prior to 1763, Samuel Moffett built an inn along Old Bark Bridge Road (now Monroe Ave) as part of a huge farm complex that took most of present-day Wenonah. It contained tenent houses, a main dwellings, and wharfs down by the creek. During the War for Independence, this inn became a meeting place and recruitment center for the Patriots. New Jersey saw more fighting during that war than any other of the 13 colonies, partially because the loyalties of her citizens were divided, creating a civil war.
Old Gloucester County certainly was not spared fighting, with battles at Fort Mercer at Red Bank Battlefield and the Battle of Gloucester. But a skirmish between loyalists and patriots also occured at the bridge along Old Bark Bridge Road near this inn, as the bridge was one of the few crossings of the creek in the area.
The house is now a private residence, and has been realigned to face away from the Old Bark Bridge Road.
Wenonah Woods is open dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. Please respect the hours on these trails, especially as they often times pass right along the edges of people's property. Also, please use official trailheads and do not cut through people's property. These trails have some ups and downs, as well as some wet spots, although the town does an amazing job of maintaining them.
