Geocache Description:

Well it wouldn't be an EK series without mention of a roundabout... this area was originally a high rocky hill top which has been blasted away to make way for the roundabout. The original piece of land was in fact know as the whirlies to locals. The following information was taken from an online article by local historian Chris Ladd...

"Upon the roundabout since 1988 are the 5 famous identical ball sculptures that were designed by artist Wendy Taylor, and feature on her CV...The Whirlies is low lying yet surrounded by several hills which rise suddenly from the ground. This unusual arrangement appears to be related to the volcanic rock deposits which at nearby Kingsgate had to be blasted through to make room for the modern road. This area was waste common land on the boundary of the Barony of Calderwood, which only served for rough grazing as it could not be ploughed due to the hard underlying rock and various boulder litter. Specifically the name Whirlies is thought to have applied to the ‘rough broomclad brae face’ below the former site of Forefaulds House whose spot is now occupied by a nursing home of the same name"
