Geocache Description:

PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY TOOLS, THERE IS NO NEED TO APPLY FORCE TO ACCESS THE LOG!!

I was enjoying a walk at this wonderful park when an odd question presented itself.  Why is a place used by people for leisure time called the same thing as a temporary spot to place a vehicle?  In other words, why do you park your vehicle to go to the park?

Never one to not seek out useless information, I think I found the likely reason.  Of course, it involves the United States Congress and the unintended consequences of law.

“AN ACT authorizing the corporation of the city of Washington to set apart portions of streets and avenues as parks for trees and walks. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the corporation of the city of Washington be, and hereby is authorized to set apart from time to time, as parks, to be adorned with shade trees, walks, and enclosed with curb-stones, not exceeding one-half the width of any and all avenues and streets in the said city of Washington, leaving a roadway of not less than" thirty-five feet in width in the centre of said avenues and streets, or two such roadways on each side of the park in the centre of the same; and said corporation is hereby authorized and empowered to levy and collect special taxes in such equal and just manner as said corporation may determine in particular wards, parts, or sections of the city, or upon nil property burdening upon avenues, streets, and alleys, which shall have been so improved, sufficient in amount to pay the actual cost thereof ; Provided, That nothing herein contained shall be held to apply to Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and Indiana avenues nor to Four-and-a-half street between the City Hall and Pennsylvania avenue: And provided further. That nothing in this act shall authorize, the occupancy of any portion of the public streets or. avenues for private purposes.

Approved, April, 6, 1870. . .”  -  The Weekly Arizonan, May 14th 1870.

Apparently, these “park trees” adorning the city streets became a popular place to temporarily tie horses while making a quick stop to a local vendor.  The horseless carriage soon followed, and the parking spot practically created itself.

So this leaves one important question about this geocache.  Is this cache a park and grab?  I invite you to find out.  This log only geocache is located at Evelyn M. Schiffler Memorial Park.  Please replace the cache exactly as found. Remember to BYOP. Happy caching.
