Kurt Cobain was the lead singer and guitarist for Nirvana, the band that shot to fame with 1991's Nevermind. While it wasn't the last album Kurt appears on, it is the one largely responsible for drawing mainstream attention to the remarkable alt-rock Seattle music scene.

Sub Pop was the independent record company that recorded the Nevermind. Nirvana and many other Seattle-based bands were labelled "grunge"; apparently a term coined by one of the co-founders of Sub Pop. It was a label that Kurt eventually came to loathe.

Kurt's death was mourned by Generation X in the way an earlier generation had grieved the passing of Jim Morrison. Both were enigmatic and troubled artists , albeit in differing ways. Intriguingly both were 27 years old at the time they died...
