Although equally as notorious for her rock and roll lifestyle as she was for her musical career, Amy Winehouse reportedly had little time for rock music, instead preferring soul and R&B. Before dying at the age of 27 due to alcohol poisoning, she released two impressive albums of largely original work, both showcasing her talents as a songwriter and her husky soul-steeped voice. Those albums were Frank (2003) and Back to Black (2006).
Back to Black largely details Amy’s tumultuous relationship with her then ex-boyfriend and future husband, and delves into themes of guilt, grief, infidelity and heartbreak in the relationship. The album garnered numerous awards and would eventually be ranked as Rolling Stone’s 20th best album of the 2000’s. Following Amy’s death on 23 July 2011 the album re-entered the UK Album charts, and a week later made it back to the Number One spot for the fourth time since its initial release.

With her connection to popular music and her death at the age of 27 Amy became inextricably linked to the lives and fates of other members of the so-called ‘27 Club’. However, apart from a discussion with Ray Manzarek of The Doors who proposed that Amy record a 'posthumous duet' with the vocals of Jim Morrison (a la Nat King Cole and daughter Natalie), there appears to be no direct contact between Amy and other members of the Club. In his book titled ‘Amy, 27’ author Howard Sounes draws parallels with the lives and circumstances of each of Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain.

In keeping with her wishes, Amy’s ashes were interred alongside those of her grandmother Cynthia, of whom she was especially fond. Amy, for all her faults, fully embraced her family’s Jewish heritage saying “Being Jewish to me is about being together as a real family. It’s not about lighting candles and saying a ‘brocha’ (blessing)”. And while she may not have been particularly religious, one can’t help but wonder how she viewed numerology and the like…
