Brian Jones was the founder and original leader of the Rolling Stones, also responsible for giving the band its name. Jones was a multi-instrumentalist with a flamboyant sense of fashion, and said to have fathered at least five children to as many women. However he became estranged from his bandmates during a period in which he struggled with substance abuse, legal troubles and mood swings.
During the recording of Beggars Banquet it was reported that he infrequently attended studio recording sessions and that on occasions when he did, the recording equipment was deliberately switched off. Ultimately he was fired from the band on 8 June 1969. He was found dead in his swimming pool less than a month later on 3 July 1969. To this day controversy remains about the circumstances of his death.
He was 27 years old.
Jimi Hendrix, who would later die at the age of 27, dedicated a song to Brian on national television. Jim Morrison of The Doors memorialised Brian in a poem; Morrison died exactly two years (to the day) after Brian, also aged 27.
Beggars Banquet was the last Rolling Stones album to be released while Brian was still alive. While he can be seen playing maracas in the rock 'n roll circus video clip of Sympathy For The Devil, Brian is credited only with providing backing vocals in the studio. Other contributions to Beggars Banquet included slide guitar, harmonica, Mellotron, sitar and tambura.
The Stones went on to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world, which still records and tours to this day. Brian's songs no longer feature in the set...
