Leap Day falls on a Saturday this year? Let’s do it in style! BBQ style! We will meet at Porkbelly BBQ at 3:00 for some great food and good company. We'll also see if anyone got up to anything interesting since the morning's event. Check out the other event for more info.
But what are we supposed to do between the 9:00 event and the 3:00 event?
Round up a carload of cachers and spend the day on the open road collecting smileys. You’ll have about 5.5 hours to do about 3 hours of driving, plus finding these caches and whatever others you want to seek. The Gumball Run will stay within an area roughly bounded by I75, US6, US224, and Ohio 53
What is a gumball run?
Kind of like a cannonball run, except there isn’t a clock. You’ll have certain checkpoints (caches) to hit along the way. They can be found in any order and you will have plenty of time to get to them all safely and within the bounds of Ohio traffic laws. You will probably have extra time to kill. If you choose to break any traffic laws, you will bear the consequences on your own.
What will be provided?
A list of unpublished (but publishable) caches that are part of the game. These will all be straightforward PnG-type hides handed out at the 9:00 event. No special equipment, no 5-mile hikes through the woods. Maybe a walk across a cemetery or ballfield. Each of the caches may ask you to take an item – of course we will provide those, and they are yours to keep or to drop in another cache on a later date. Be sure to thank M0M0f5 for placing some of today's caches.
Are you feeding us?
No. Your food is on your own dime. It is a casual sit-down restaurant with waitstaff. They have menu items at many price points, from $5 appetizers on up.
What do we need?
To log this event, you just need to show up at 3:00. If you want to participate in the Gumball Run, you'll need a team. Load up a carful of cachers, some snacks and beverages, your regular caching equipment, and maybe some pocket money. It would be nice to chip in on gas money for your driver, too. You could also prepare a query centered on the north side of Fostoria if you want to grab some bonus caches. Dress for the weather.
Can we start late?
Yup! If you can’t send a delegate to the event morning event, message the CO to make arrangements.
So how do we win?
At each cache your team will have a decision to make. That decision will be worth an amount of points yet to be determined. So for example, you might be asked to stamp your card, but there are several stamps in the box. Or there will be a box full of random holiday toys and you grab whichever one you like. Once everyone is back at HQ, we will randomly determine how many points the red stamp is worth vs. how many points the blue stamp is worth, or how many points a Halloween toy is worth vs an Easter toy, etc. You will then find out if you chose wisely. The prizes will be *team* prizes that are easily shared, so there is no need to keep track of multiple cards/collections in the same vehicle. One vehicle = one team. The prizes are fabulous(ly cheap) enough that it isn’t worth trying to game the game. We will also do a random draw for FTF privileges.
Ain’t nobody got time for that!
Want the souvenir, but don’t have all day? Join us at 3:00-3:30 and sign the log.
Teams vs. accounts:
You will compete as part of a team. A team is a legal carload. You can organize your team on the other event page.
The short version:
- Post a will attend that identifies how many cachers with your account will be attending this event. The restaurant is limited to about 100 people, so they can continue to serve muggles.
- Go over to the other event page to organize or declare a team for the Gumball Run.
