During the early BRT system planning, in 2005, this station at Shangshe had one of the highest projected passenger boarding levels even though the entire area south of the station is taken up by a park. The very high demand was a result of the ultra-dense Shangshe urban village to the north-east of the station and modern highrises to the north. From 2005 to 2009 other stations with higher demand surpassed Shangshe including Gangding, Tangxia, Tiyu Zhongxin and Shipaiqiao. Still, Shangshe has very high demand levels and is a major station in the BRT system.
The Tianhe Gongyuan park to the south was in 2005 lined with ugly brick walls. These were dismantled as part of the BRT implementation in 2010, and in 2019 an additional major improvement was made with an attractively landscaped and (at night) lit park and plaza which opened in late 2019 and is beautiful in the evening. The newly landscaped park features lots of seating and robust public spaces and no admonitions not to disturb the grass or other plants. The cache is located in this newly landscaped park adjacent to the BRT station.
The station and area is quite active throughout the day and well into the night. At 5m wide the pedestrian bridge is generously proportioned but the high pedestrian volumes can at times still make it feel a bit crowded. The station is often heavily crowded in the morning peak but overall the BRT system and associated improvements along the corridor have provided a huge boost to the appeal of this part of the city.
