“Salerno è mia, ed io la difendo!”
Questo è il motto attribuito a San Matteo Apostolo ed Evangelista, protettore della città di Salerno a cui è intitolata la Basilica Cattedrale Primaziale Metropolitana di Santa Maria degli Angeli insieme a Gregorio VII
La leggenda vuole che egli salvò la città da un’invasione di pirati saraceni nel lontano 1544: avendo percepito il pericolo imminente i salernitani cercarono riparo nell’attuale cattedrale eretta in onore del Santo (il cosiddetto Duomo di Salerno), pregandolo di intervenire. Fu in quel momento che il cielo si oscurò e una terribile tempesta disperse le navi in mare.
E’ difficile spiegare quanto sia viscerale l’amore che i Salernitani hanno per il proprio santo patrono che viene celebrato il 21 settembre anche con una processione che attraversa il centro storico della città. La statua del Santo viene condotta a spalla da una “paranza” di portatori e per rientrare risalgono correndo la scalinata alle spalle della nostro GZ.
Rispetto al nostro Duomo potrei raccontarvi molte cose, ma vi invito a leggere tutto su wikipedia.
Qualche curiosità:
- la provincia di Salerno conta un primato assoluto: ben due Apostoli sono seppelliti a pochi chilometri di distanza. In questo duomo San Matteo e nella Cattedrale di Amalfi troverete alcuni resti di Sant’Andrea
- Papà Gregorio VII, morto nel 1085, consacrò il Duomo e poi qui fu seppellito. Lontano da Roma, in esilio, dopo aver scomunicato gli scismatici Enrico IV e l’antipapa Clemente III
- splendida e scintillante la cripta dove sono custodite le spoglie del Santo. Vi trovate un suo busto bifronte, da cui – purtroppo – è diffuso il detto che i salernitani abbiano la doppia faccia.
- qualche anno fa un notissimo brand della grande distribuzione della moda produsse e mise in vendita una linea ispirata proprio ai mosaici della cattedrale

According to the legend it he saved the city from an invasion of Saracen pirates in 1544: having perceived the imminent danger the Salerno people sought shelter in the current cathedral built in honor of the Saint (the so-called Cathedral of Salerno), asking him to intervene. It was at that moment that the sky darkened and a terrible storm dispersed the ships into the sea.
It is difficult to explain how visceral is the love that the Salerno people have for their patron saint which is celebrated on September 21 also with a procession through the historic center of the city. The statue of the saint is carried on the shoulder by a "paranza" (that litterally means a little fishing boat, in this case group of people) of porters and to return they go up running the staircase behind our GZ.

Just a few curiosities:
