Now, a bit about the art piece “Dwelling”:
Dwelling,
Artist: Xiaojing Yan, 2018
Laser Cut Stainless Steel
This art piece, "Dwelling" is meant to convey the notion of home, which “relates to places of memory, family history, social comment and environmental issues,” states the city.
Yan says that the piece is meant to remind people of their own experiences and their place in society. “I designed this work to be simple and familiar on the surface. However, its meanings are layered and fresh enough to sustain. I believe the house concept is open, generous and relevant enough to be accessible to people of many different classes and cultures, to invite and involve a variety of interpretations and tastes.”
Yan is a Chinese-Canadian artist who lives and works in Markham, Ont. She received a master’s degree in fine arts for sculpture from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor of fine arts from Nanjing Arts Institution in China.
Yan’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums internationally.
