Geocache Description:

Welcome to Whiritoa, it is located 16 km north of Waihi, and 13 km south of Whangamata

It has a permanent population of around 300, during Christmas holidays this number increases to several thousand.

Drive on in, there is a cafe/takeaways/store, community library, tennis courts, playground, community hall, volunteer fire station, and surf lifesaving club (built 1976).

Find the tennis courts (built in 1983), volley wall and skateboarding area in the recreation sports area.

For almost 50 years the southern end of the beach was mined for its sand, stopping in the 1970's. The amount taken is unknown, but one website estimates more than 180,000 m³ of sand had been removed (or 72 olympic sized swimming pools).

The beach is approximately 1400m long, two streams drain into the sea, Ramarama (north) and Whiritoa (south).

The cache is a quick park and grab, turn off highway 25, onto Whiritoa beach road for safe parking.
