Pōhutukawa Reserve is one of eight reserves in Whiritoa.
The reserve was created when the land was subdivided in the 1960's, and the trees where estimated to be 90 years old in 2002.
The Hauraki District Council (Schedule of Protected Trees 2014) protected the trees in this reserve:
- Pōhutukawa (42) (Metrosideros excelsa)
- Ti Kouka (1) (cabbage tree - Cordyline australis)
If you want to find the other protected Pōhutukawa in Whiritoa, they are all on the same street (Fisherman's Bend): No. 38, 55, 59 and 73
This reserve is included in the Project Crimson Trust Trail, there map (click here) shows other Pōhutukawa you can visit around the Coromandel coast.
Some fun Pōhutukawa facts:
- Pōhutukawa live 1000 years
- The seed will last 6 months
- Leaves on the tree last 4 years
- Every year a tree loses 25% of its leaves
There had been a cache hidden here previously, so I was sad to see it had gone. Please be stealthy, and hopefully this cache will last in this high muggle zone.
Sit and take in the views.
