ねずみ観音

むかしむかし、足の速いいたずらねずみがいた。 速く走る馬に憧れて、お地蔵様に「足が速くなりたいから馬にしてくれ」とお願いした。お地蔵様は「お堂を綺麗にすることと35日悪いことをしないことを条件に馬にする願いを叶えてあげよう」と約束した。 35日目、ねずみは近くを通った女の子から餅をうばってしまう。お地蔵様は願いを叶えてくれるが、顔は馬、他はねずみの格好にかえてしまう。 ねずみは怒りと情けなさにお地蔵さまの背面を一心不乱に掘っていたが、疲れ果てて息絶えてしまった。かわいそうに思ったお地蔵さまはねずみを観音様にかえてやりました。

Once upon a time there was a naughty mouse that could run fast. He yearned for a horse running fast and asked the Jizo to "I want to be a horse to speed up my legs.". The Jizo promised to "I will make your wish come true on condition that you clean the hall and don't do anything bad for 35 days.". On day 35, the mouse snatches rice cakes from a girl who passes by. The Jizo makes his wish come true, but he changes his face into a horse and the rest into a mouse. The mouse was so angry and miserably digging the back of the statue that it died of exhaustion. The Jizo turned the mouse into a Kannon statue.
