This simple offset multi-cache is part of a series based on Australian historic churches.
St Thomas Anglican Church is situated on the corner of Onkaparinga Valley and Junction Roads at Balhannah. The first church on this site had been built in 1848 with a fireplace and chimneys, and was possibly intended as a school. The architect of the current building was Robert Rickman Page. The church was constructed of bluestone with red brick quoins. The foundations stone (not seen at time of visit) was laid by Bishop Augustus Short on 6 January 1865. The church was officially opened on 10 September 1865.
The church plan was described by some as ‘whimsical’ and by the architect ‘adaptative’. From the Register 13 January 1865 … “The principal entrance is from the main road through a deep recessed doorway … thence through a covered way to the tower, where seats will be provided for a waiting congregation, and serving a double purpose - first, as a screen from the summer's heat and the winter's cold; secondly, to screen the minister from the gaze of passers-by and the congregation from an annoying draft. There will also be two other doors for entrance or exit - one to sacristy the other from cemetery … There will be a font second to none in the colony … The style of building is called by the designer ‘adaptative’.”
