CROATIA

Croatia, officially the Republic of Croatia is a European Union country in Southeast Europe. It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the southeast, and shares a maritime border with Italy. Its capital city is Zagreb.

Croatia is classifed by the World Bank as a high-income country and by the United Nations as having a developed economy It is classified as having a very high Human Development Index.  The economy is dominated by service, industrial sectors and agriculture. Tourism is a significant source of revenue, with Croatia ranked among the top 20 most popular tourist destinations in the world. The state controls a part of the economy, with substantial government expenditure. The European Union is Croatia's most important trading partner.  Croatia provides a social security, universal health care system, and a tuition-free primary and secondary education, while supporting culture through numerous public institutions and corporate investments in media and publishing. Croatia gained independence in 1991, but was subsequently involved in four years of war and turmoil. This came to an end in November 1995 under the Erdut Agreement.

Croatia is known for its diverse geography. Despite being a relatively small country, its physical geography ranges from the warm sandy beaches of the Adriatic Sea to the mountains of the Dinaric Alps, reaching up to 6007' at Dinara Peak. Earthcachers might be interested to note Croatia's Karst limestone topography, which has led to many cave systems- including 14 caves over 500 meters deep, and three greater than 1000 meters.
