The call boxes of Washington DC were first installed throughout the capital starting in the 1860's. They became obsolete with the rise of the home telephone and 911 service, but remain in place on many street corners. For those of you new to DC, there are many caches located in call boxes.
In 2019 the Art on Call project (DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities) commissioned local artist Charles Bergen to re-purpose 8 downtown call boxes as sculptures to notable women of Washington DC. Each contains a cast iron sculpture, and a plaque that tells her story.
How to claim the cache
Visit all 8 of these sites and gather the numeric clues. Then solve for the final. Leave yourself about an hour to complete this cache. You can visit the waypoints in any order, but I recommend going from sound to north, as the waypoints are numbered.
Here are the questions - all answers are a signal digit except A and B.
Waypoint A: Which constitutional amendment resulted from her work (2 digits) = A
Waypoint B: Number of musical notes on the call box base (2 digits)= B THIS CALL BOX IS MISSING. B=12
Waypoint C: [Number of letters] in the valley = C
Waypoint D: Number of letters in the name of the Junior High School where she taught = D
Waypoint E: Number of years between when she was refused service, and when her case made it to the Supreme Court = E
Waypoint F: Was a [number of letters] and dedicated community activist = F
Waypoint G: Number of needles in the pin cushion on the left OR right each side of the call box = G
Waypoint H: Number of characters in the first word on the north side of the base = H
Puzzle:
Y = B*12 + (D+E)*10 + G - 4
Z = (A*100 + C*5 + F*10 + H*4 - 6) / 1000
Final Coordinates are: N 38° 54.Y' W 77° Z'
Check your answers:
Checksum: A+B+C+D+E+F+G+H = 66
