Welcome to my Greek Mythology Series! Zeus is the Olympian God of the Sky and Thunder. He is considered the king of all other gods and mankind, and the most important figure in Greek Mythology. A strange series of events made Zeus both the youngest and oldest son of Cronus and Rhea. After defeating the original Sky God Uranus, Cronus had heard a prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him to become ruler of the Gods. To try and prevent this, Cronus swallowed Zeus’ siblings at birth. Zeus also would have been eaten, but his mother Rhea gave Cronus a stone disguised as a baby, and hid baby Zeus in a cave. Zeus was raised by nymphs, and met his first wife Metis. She suggested that he should seek revenge on his father. Zeus disguised himself and tricked Cronus into drinking poisoned wine. The wine made Cronus sick, and he vomited so much that he regurgitated Zeus’ siblings intact and ready for revenge. The second birth of the siblings made Zeus the oldest among them. After defeating their father Cronus and the rest of the Titan Gods in the Titanomachy, Zeus and his two brothers shared out the world between them. Zeus would rule the sky, Poseidon the sea, and Hades the Underworld. Zeus was warned that his child with his first wife Metis may be a threat to him, so he swallowed his wife whole. The child was still born, springing from Zeus’ forehead, fully grown and armoured. This was Athena, Goddess of Wisdom. Zeus fathered many children with seven different wives, the last of which was Hera. The ruler of the skies and weather, Zeus was also associated with wisdom, destiny, battles and power. The name “Zeus” is believed to stem from the Ancient Greek word for “bright”. Usually Zeus is depicted with a sceptre in one hand and a thunderbolt in the other, and sometimes with a crown of oak leaves. In the Ancient Greek texts, Zeus is often described as “aegis-bearing”. The Aegis was an enormous shield, which Zeus often carried with him but sometimes lent to his daughter Athena.
