My first geocache hide! My paternal grandfather Percy Allerton Lyon is buried here in the peaceful Deer Park Cemetery in Tummel. In 1942 he joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a mechanic and served in that capacity until the wars end in 1946. As a mechanic, he faced many a harrowing moment recovering and repairing tanks, personnel carriers and other pieces of equipment necessary to the war effort. Enemy snipers, mortars and artillery fire were a constant threat and the mechanics were often targeted because of their support capabilities and indeed he was wounded by shrapnel but survived. Returning home in 1946 he went into farming and started a family, plagued by the many nightmares and trauma from the war and what would be now known as PTSD. It must have been difficult readjusting postwar and my father has not talked about his growing up years much. Grandpa died in November 1973 at the age of 53, seven months before I was born. It would have been awesome to have known him. Grandpas grave is located straight east of GZ, with a small unassuming headstone which in winter will be completely buried in snow. Speaking of winter, getting to the cache may require a short walk through deep snow so be prepared. It should be a fairly straightforward find but if it's too difficult let me know and I'll update the page with a hint. Muggle factor should be very low but use stealth whenever necessary. A log roller may be needed. Bring your own pen/pencil and place the rolled log into the cap end first when reinserting and please re-hide in its exact spot. The cache is able to be accessed without entering the cemetery if you wish.
