Geocache Description:

EN: Castel Žebnik was one of the most important provincial outposts in Zasavje. The area was initially in the possession of the Countess Heme Breže-Selška from Carinthia in the so-called Savinjski mark, but later it became the property of the Duke of Carniola. He is first mentioned indirectly in 1150, when he appears as a witness in an award document of the Roudgerus de Sibenecche, and we also meet the knight in the same capacity five years later, when he appears with his son of the same name. As witnesses, we see Žebniški in the medieval documents many more times, and the castle is explicitly mentioned only in 1286 as castrum and Sybenekke, Sybnekke. At that time, it was negotiated by Count Ulrik Vovbrski and Duke Albert of Habsburg, who then bought it and delivered it to the then lords of Carinthia and Carniola, Count of Tyrol.

At the end of the 13th century, the line of Žebniški ministers disappeared from history, but the castle continued to be provincial, albeit within the framework of the nearby Laško provincial office. This is witnessed, inter alia, by a charter of 1340 by which the town of Zebnik, Herman and his son Yuri - Herman, together with other Herman children, promise to the provincial governor Friderik Zhovski and his heirs a loyal service and that they will always , when requested by them, without objection they shall go to him or to any of his castle - daz wir uns and ziehen suln und zu welher ir vest.

Herman, then a Habsburg landlord or perhaps still a Tyrolean provincial burgher, was no longer mentioned later, but the castle - in 1366 passed into the possession of the Celjans and remained in their hands until 1456, when he and Ulrik II. extinct. The Chronicle of the Counts of Celje briefly informs us of later events. Emperor Frederick, who, with the help of Vitovec, inherited many of the castles of Celje, convened all of their townspeople and caretakers: just went buy it. And maybe there were two, or barely one, who had not handed over the castle he owned, and that was just the guardian of the castle of Zebra ... "

What follows is not reported by the Chronicle, but it can be concluded that during the further conflicts for the Celje heritage, Žebnik was also affected. Perhaps already then, but certainly once in the 16th century, he was abandoned, since his position was anything but ready for the habitation of a modern-day gentleman who had taken over.

Valvasor, who depicted the castle three times in his Topography and then in his Glory, described Žebnik as follows:

“But this Zebnik Castle lies on a high rocky and steep mountain. He was big and powerful a long time ago, and was protected from all sides by enemy attack. It can only be approached on one side, where it is most solidified. On the other hand, one cannot approach him. "

The remains of the castle are located on a low mine a few tens of meters west of the Church of Sts. Mother of God, which used to be a castle chapel. Access to the ruins and the church is only possible on foot, since the back of the road is in very poor condition. First, follow the Calvary, which leads to the church, then follow the path around the heap or up the steep stairs.

In order to avoid unnecessary destruction of the existing remains of the castle, I give you accurate instructions for finding the cache. The cache is located on the north side of the wall at the bottom, see spoiler.

However, since it is a castle treasure, the difficulty must be a little higher, do you agree? A little challenge awaits you before logging in, what exactly you will see at the cache.

Please follow this instructions:

Don't use force, rotate gently!

After looging close it to the end, so next Geocacher will have the same expiriance.

The cache contains a journal, pen and space for TB.
