Metro Parks Fair Park is the culmination of a plan to transform 46 acres of asphalt, concrete and gravel at The Fairgrounds Nashville into a park and green space, injecting new public uses into the city-owned property south of downtown. This new greenspace includes eight multi-use soccer fields, a 1.3 mile greenway, a dog park and other amenities in this underutilized, flood-prone part of the fairgrounds south end that is flanked by Brown’s Creek. Eventually, the new Brown's Creek Greenway will tie in to the larger Nashville Greenway system, linking this park to many others in the city.
While I love the way they have reclaimed this space for the community, as a Nashville native of a certain age, I do take some issue with the name. Fair Park conjures up childhood memories of drinking water from a lion's mouth, riding tiny trains, visiting Paris by Dark, riding the tilt-a-whirl and being terrified at the Haunted House. I hope you enjoy your visit to this wonderful new greenspace, but my thoughts will always go to the happy memories made on the other side of the fairgrounds when I think of Fair Park.
This cache is placed with a permit from Metro Parks as part of a series to highlight new parks in the system. These micro container "Park Plates" help us to share parks with the geocaching community where a more traditional style of geocache would not be appropriate.
