In 1971 A.McArthur of Rendelsham offered a section of his land to what was known then as the National Parks Commission to be dedicated to a Reserve. On 27 April 1972 it was proclaimed as the Belt Hill Conservation Park when the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 came into force.
In 1990 the conservation park was described as consisting of ‘a consolidated calcarenite dune overlain by sandy soil to the East and swale on the low lying plain to the West.
The vegetation consists of Banksia, Blackwood and Golden Wattle and introduced pasture with some kangaroo grass and knobby club-rush. In 1950 a row of pine trees were grown to control sand drift. The conservation park is fenced off to protect the area.
There is evidence of a substantial Aboriginal population who lived here with two archaeological sites having been reported to have thin scatters of artefacts found on the surface on the dune.
On the southern side is an abandoned stone quarry and a sandpit to the north which government agencies extracted stone for road construction from.
The conservation park is classified as an IUCN Category III protected area
A natural monument or feature (IUCN Category III) is a comparatively smaller area that is specifically allocated to protect a natural monument and its surrounding habitats.
The cache is hidden at the abandoned quarry and there is no need to go into the fenced Conservation Park.
