On the 29th of December 1943, a ferry pilot 2nd Lt Herman C. Carey took off from the then Renfrew Airport to transport a P-47D Thunderbolt fighter / fighter-bomber aircraft to RAF Burtonwood, near Warrington.
Due to poor visibility (low cloud / heavy mist) he crashed the aircraft into the trees alongside this road. The memorial stone stands in the gap left by the crash.
