Though Highlands Hammock Park first opened in March 1931, it became one of the original four Florida State Parks when the Florida State Park System was established in 1935. The Florida Forest and Park Service began operating Highlands Hammock as a state park on August 1, 1935. It was one of the four original Florida State Parks when the state park system was created.
