Geocache Description:

While clearing out old boxes, I came across a 10 inch piece of handspun Indigo yarn.  It brought back some memories of a long ago time.

Very few of my current friends will remember or even know of a time when I volunteered at an 1855 village.  No blue jeans and tennis shoes then.  It was long dresses, several petticoats and a sun bonnet.  I spent a lot of time cooking over an open fire, tending a garden, dipping candles, spinning wool and weaving rag rugs.  Our group often went into schools to do demonstrations on pioneer living.  Our 1855 dance group even went to Colorado for a dance demonstration. We also set up camps at other historical sites like Fort Scott National Historic Site. Some of us stayed in a teepee while others stayed at the barracks.

A 10 inch piece of Indigo yarn brought back other memories: A weekend hand shearing sheep, another hand spinning wool on an old walking spinning wheel, and sitting at a loom while weaving a blanket.

This 10 inch piece of yarn is all that remains from another weekend learning to use natural dyes to color the yarn.  Several of us spent hours collecting walnut hulls for browns, larkspur for yellows, red cabbage for a muddy purple, and onion skins for yellows and browns and Elderberries for some blues. We collected indigo from a garden and created still more shades of blue including Indigo Blue.

Time moved on - 10 inches of Indigo and lot of great memories.
