Come celebrate 20 Years of Geocaching on Saturday May 2 from 11:00AM until 1:00 PM at Mattair Springs traihead north of Live Oak.
It all started on May 1st, 2000 when President Clinton announced that the scrambling of the satellite navigation system, known as Selective Availability (SA), would be turned off. On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight, eastern savings time, twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. On May 3, 2000 the first geocache was hidden and had it's coordinates posted on the internet. A short time later it was found and this sport we all love was born.
Let's gather to tell geocaching stories, where geocaching was, where it is now, and where it is going, eat some food and maybe find a cache or two. Also bring any geocoins/TB's you want to drop off or be discovered. Please bring a dish, chips or a dessert to share. I will be providing hot dogs and hamburgers, buns, condiments, paper products, and water.
This event is part of the Geocaching 20th Anniversary celebration happening around the world between now and the end of the year and will meet the Groundspeak requirements for a special souvenir if you log that you attended the event. Check out the links below.
This Event is part of a limited release of Community Celebration Events to celebrate 20 years of geocaching. Geocachers are hosting events between May 2, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Learn more about Community Celebration Events on the Geocaching Blog.
