The sun will set on the wide open plain of the Curragh at 16:11 on the day of the Winter Solstice. Why not join us to bid farewell to Autumn and greet Winter.

People are free to chat to us for the duration or take an amble to pick up some caches. Dress up well; the Curragh is exposed. A headtorch is probably a good option to avoid stepping in sheep poo after dark!

The Winter Solstice is the astronomical moment when the Sun reaches the Tropic of Capricorn. This gives us the shortest day and longest night of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere. Regardless of what the weather is doing outside your window, the solstice marks the official start of winter. When the winter solstice happens in the Northern Hemisphere, the North Pole is tilted about 23.4° (23°27′) away from the Sun. Because the Sun’s rays are shifted southward from the Equator by the same amount, the vertical noon rays are directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn (23°27′ S). (see image in gallery)
