In 1936, shortly after the loss of mastodon tusks due to improper excavation, the workmen digging a new line in the orange grove came upon another discovery that they did not immediately recognize. To avoid another loss, they called for supervisor before proceeding with the excavations. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Connery took over the task of unearthing the fossilized remains of an animal. After hours of painstaking work to scrape off the soil and seal with shellac to exclude the air, the fossil was fully uncovered and identified as a gigantic turtle measuring nearly 3 feet high, four feet across and five feet long! Is was estimated that when alive, nearly 35,000 years ago, it weighed about a ton.
