Gravel is a fascinating material. Who has not admired the richness of shapes and colors of these rounded stones on a riverbank or in a clear mountain stream? Some pebbles are monochrome white, gray or black, there are green, brown, brick red or salmon colored. Not a few consist of two or more colored components. Some are dotted or wavy marbled, others have glittering crystalline inclusions. No wonder that gravel is often used as a decorative covering in gardens and parks. But why do pebbles appear to be industrially manufactured, sorted by size, polished and rounded? Gravel never arises where it is found. All the colorful stones have already come a long way. Kies ist ein faszinierendes Material. Wer hat nicht schon den Formen- und Farbenreichtum dieser gerundeten Steine an einem Flussufer oder in einem klaren Bergbach bewundert? Manche Kiesel sind einfarbig weiß, grau oder schwarz, es gibt grüne, braune, ziegelrote oder lachsfarbene. Nicht wenige bestehen aus zwei oder mehr farblichen Komponenten. Manche sind punktiert oder wellenförmig marmoriert, wieder andere haben glitzernde kristalline Einschlüsse. Kein Wunder, dass Kies gerne als dekorativer Belag in Gärten und Parkanlagen verwendet wird. Weshalb aber erscheinen Kiesel wie industriell hergestellt, nach Größe sortiert, poliert und abgerundet? Kies entsteht nie dort, wo er gerade gefunden wird. All die bunten Steinchen haben bereits einen langen Weg hinter sich. Welche Steine sind es? Wie alt ist der Kiesel? Hier ein paar Beispiele:
