McLean Lane links Murray Street and Wellington Street, running between a multi-story carpark and a former gasworks building (which is currently occupied by a local arts group as studio space). In 2009 the City of Perth unsuccessfully sought to rename the lane, Gasworks Lane.
The City of Perth’s urban renewal of McLean Lane saw several artistic treatments added to the thoroughfare running between Wellington and Hay streets. Drawing on its rich history, the laneway enhancement includes colourful artworks, decorative elements, original cobblestones and stunning feature lighting. The revitalisation was inspired by Bob McLean’s second-hand furniture shop, which was located in McLean Lane in the 1920s. In 2016 the laneway was opened up for alfresco dining.
