Geocache Description:

01 March 2020, 10:00 - 10:30

Note the date changed!!!!

Welcome to another edition of the annual "Freezin' for no reason" event.  In the past we had the option to build a campfire at the coords, this year we will not.

Note the terrain rating.  This as always, is meant to be a little tougher to get to, and may not be for everyone.  Make sure you log a will attend or put this on your watchlist, in case changes are made in the coming weeks.  Also note the new location, we'll be near Calumet County Park, just not on land.

Safety first.  Note the parking location.  It is the closest location to access the event from land.  There are many places to access the lake, however, I would NOT suggest driving onto the lake.  The lake froze over later than in years past and the ice may not be thick enough to support the weight of a vehicle.  I also suggest using the buddy system, I would never go out on the ice by myself and you shouldn't either. Some climbing will be necessary crossing some ice shoves.  Don't worry, they aren't that big, but again be careful.

Now with all that said... if you find yourself bored at the above mentioned time and date and have literally nothing better to do, why not go "Freezin' for no reason"?  Or if you're just not smart enough to stay home where its warm and comfy, meet me out on the lake to discuss your latest caching adventures... like waking on water.

Common sense would dictate that you may encounter rough jagged edges, steep drops, cold weather, slippery conditions, strong winds, and possibly a polar bear (it's technically possible).

Update for 2/23/2020

Couple things for the upcoming event.

-There is a new cache, hopefully publishing around the time of the event.  It's not too far away, and should be an easy find, enjoy.

-Next and more important.  The wife and I went out to get some better coords for the eventyesterday.  We had a tough (but fun) time getting onto the water.  The ice shoves look smaller than they were a few weeks ago, but that is only because of the 12-14" of snow on top of them.  Caution will be needed when traversing the ice shoves.  The issue is that you can't see where the jagged ice shoves are and aren't.  One step, I was on top of the ice, then next my knee was under the snow line.

I know some people like to bring their pets, we took our dog yesterday as well.  In hind sight, that may not have been the best idea.  She also struggled traversing the shoves, blindly as did her masters.  You know yourselves and your pets more than I, of course.

As always if this is too difficult or don't feel you should be attempting this, then don't.  There is another event the day before this one.  GC8JT9V

One last note, I only saw one pickup truck on the ice.  Based on that fact, I would suggest you not driving a vehicle onto the ice.  Although I did see lots of atv's and snowmobiles.

Hope to see you there, and if not, hope to see you the day before at Demek's event "Leap Day Meet and Greet" GC8JT9V

Cache on my friends.
