Alta ligger midt i det enorme nordfylket Troms og Finnmark.
Alta har en rik historie og forhistorie som strekker seg over ti tusen år, da de første menneskene ankom regionen etter den gradvise forsvinningen av massive isbreer som dekket hele regionen.
For 7000 år siden begynte innbyggerne å skjære symboler og historier i steinene langs kysten, og de mystiske "postkortene fra fortiden" er nå en del av UNESCOs verdensarvsliste.
Historiene og sporene av kamparr fra andre verdenskrig er fremdeles synlige i landskapet og på fotografiene og historiene som er funnet i Tirpitz-museet og andre regionale museer.
Tilstedeværelsen av urbefolkningen samer er godt representert her i lokale håndverk og kulturelle turer til nærliggende reinland.
Altas moderne status som "Nordlysbyen" er velfortjent og er bygd på århundrer med forskning, studier og lokale myter.
En nordlyssyning er aldri garantert, men Alta gir ideelle værforhold for observasjon både i byen og omegn.
I mai gir natten plass til uendelig dagslys, med midnattssola som dukker opp like etter - en fantastisk tilbakebetaling for lokalbefolkningen for å holde ut et par måneder uten sol i den dypeste delen av vinteren!

Alta lies amid the huge northern county of Troms & Finnmark.
The city of Alta has a rich history and prehistory spanning ten thousand years, when the first people arrived in the region following the gradual disappearance of massive glaciers that covered the entire region.
7,000 years ago, the residents here began to carve symbols and stories into the rocks along the shore, and those mysterious "postcards from the past" are now a UNESCO World Heritage-listed exhibition surrounding the Alta Museum.
The stories and traces of combat scars from World War II are still visible in the landscape and at the photographs and stories found in the Tirpitz Museum and other regional museums.
The presence of the indigenous Sami people are well-represented here in local crafts and cultural tours into nearby reindeer country.
Alta's modern status of "City of the Northern Lights" is well-deserved and is built upon centuries of research, study and local myths.
A “Northern Lights” sighting is never guaranteed, but Alta provides ideal weather conditions for observation both in town and in the surrounding area.
In the summer, night gives way to endless daylight in the month of May, with the midnight sun appearing shortly after - a fabulous payback for the locals for enduring a couple of months without the sun in the deepest part of winter!
