While you are at the cache GZ take a look around at the views it was very different 140 years ago. You would be standing a stones throw away from a tramway that ran from West end colliery (Graces Pit) down to the coal siding at the main line at backwell a run of about 2 miles. The line only lasted from 1876 until 1881. Graces Pit closed having been in use from 1804 on and off until 1881, Whiteoak pit was the last mine and closed 1 year later ending coal mining in Nailsea. It has been estimated that 20 million tons of coal remain below Nailsea but is in narrow seams that are not economical to mine. The view is set to change in the next few years as the west side of Nailsea expands into the country side.
