Ghost of Calvin Owen
A story once told to me was that of a ghost that walks this cemetery.
It was a cold winter evening, a light snow had fallen on the ground that day. A woman was walking by the cemetery, when she noticed a man dressed in 19th century clothing, and wearing a top hat. It seemed odd, so she turned into the cemetery to catch up with him to see why he was there. She followed his footprints in the snow after losing sight of him behind a tree. The footprints lead up to a stone wall and vanished. No sight of the man or where he had disappeared to remained, and there was no where else he could've gone. An eerie feeling began to creep up the back of her neck and she suddenly felt uneasy being in The cemetery alone.
To this day, people still report sightings of the man in the top hat, walking through the cemetery. Most people believe it is the ghost of Calvin Owen, one of the town founders. He wrote a great deal about the early days of Penfield and through his writings we know a lot about the lives of the first settlers in the region.
