Geocache Description:

The Santa Fe Canal Co. had ambitious plans to shorten the 4-hour and difficult land journey from Melrose to Waldo so that products and passengers could more quickly and comfortably access the Florida RR.  A special dredge was built in Waldo that would dig this western "spur", dig a section that would join Lakes Alto and Santa Fe, and then dig a short eastern section to enable boats to dock at Melrose.  Although poorly maintained, after more than 140 years, these sections can still be used by small water craft of shallow draft.  The end of teh embankment on this western section is a popular boat-launch area for fishing Lake Alto.  Sometimes it is popular for other things as well, and is best avoided at night.

Please be careful driving along here, and turning around, since some areas can be soft and muddy, and be smart when here if you are alone at any time.  If you fall into the canal, it is not deep, but it could be frightening.   Be aware that there ARE snakes and alligators that may be seen.
