Geocache Description:

HAS = 100 of Historical Architectures Series.

The "100 of Historical Architectures Series" are one hundred historical buildings selected by the Cultural Construction Committee of the Executive Yuan of the Republic of China in 2001. The activity was first selected by all counties and cities handle the ten scenic spots in Aug. 2001. At that time, there were 25 districts in the administrative division, so 250 scenic spots should be selected. However, because the tenth place in Taichung City was accompanied by the same ticket, at the same time, a total of 251 scenes were selected. The results were announced at the end of Oct., and a panel of scholars and experts selected 150 scenic spots. Conducting national voting to determine the top 100 attractions from Nov. 25 to Dec. 10 of the year. These selected buildings are not necessarily classified into historical architectures in terms of cultural asset management. Some may have been classified as monuments, and some may not be listed as historical and historical architectures in various counties and cities.

Located in Hsinchu County, Taiwan, Hukou Old Street is a 300-meter long street occupied by 200-plus shop-houses that were built around 1920. Hukou Old Street is lined by two-story, redbrick buildings that are probably the most complete Japanese-era urban thoroughfare remaining in Taiwan.

This Taiwan old street is preserved well with a number of government-funded renovations going on. Hukou Old Street has been repaved with granite slabs, with the facades repaired and cleaned up, as well as crafts of dragons, deer, cranes and other symbols that are important features of Chinese-style architectures. Plastic drainpipes and lights have also been installed to highlight some of the architectural features. Hukou Old Street is classical in appearance. Window frames are made of wood, and many of the houses still fitted with wooden sliding doors rather than roller steel shutters to preserve its traditional looks. Among the historical residences where there are regular residences, the old street also has several vendors and restaurants that visitors may savor authentic Hakka delicacies, as well as some grocery shopping of sweet potatoes and vegetables that are locally grown. Hukou Old Street is “L-shaped”, where visitors may find Sanyuan Temple at the corner. Sanyuan Temple was established in 1904, which is different from most of Taiwanese shrines for that the columns are square brick rather than the usual carved stone. Although Hukou Old Street may not be as the origin, it still keeps its original flavor, with less souvenir shops and visitors. It is an excellent Hsinchu stop for ones looking for a tranquil afternoon surrounded by historical buildings.

The rise and decline of Hukou Old Street is closely related to the railway. This area prospered because the railway laid by Liu Mingchuan extended to this point, with the "Dahukou Train Terminal", but later the street business declined due to the adjustment of the railway route. The historic building Laohukou Catholic Church was built on the site of the old station. After receiving a subsidy from the Council for Cultural Affairs in 2002, the fence in front of the gate was added to the image of the train station as a small post station to commemorate the history of the station.

The container is a small canister with magnet. Only a log-paper in it. Please bring a pen for this cache.
