Geocache Description:

Tokyo Eki Stamp Series (東京駅スタンプシリーズ)

Tokyo is a city blessed with what is often dubbed as the best public transportation system in the world. Tokyo's train and subway network is unrivalled - spotless, quiet and almost always on time.

Most Japan Railway stations have something in common, a unique stamp reflecting that station's history. Kids and train nerds often buy cute little books to collect the stamps of all the stations they've been to. In this series, we take a deeper look at the network that kept me moving in the half a year I spent in Tokyo, through the lens of train station stamps!

JR Joban Line Rapid (常磐線快速)

The JR Joban Line line segment begins at Nippori Station in NE Tokyo and continues all the way to Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture, via Chiba, Ibaraki and Fukushima prefectures. The total track length is 368km! However, the suburban section of the line only extends as far as Toride.

There are four types of service on the suburban section of the line, the two most common are local and rapid. Local services are operated as a through service from the Chiyoda Line at Kita Senju terminating at Toride, while Rapid services operate from Ueno (and sometimes Shinagawa via the Ueno/Tokyo Line) terminating at Toride (with some trains continuing on the Narita Line for Narita at Ayase). There are two other two types of trains, the first is special rapid, which stop at even less stations than rapid services. The second type is referred to as the "Joban Line" without the rapid designation (despite it operating as a rapid train on the suburban track). These trains operate beyond Toride as either local or rapid services on the non-suburban section of track north of Toride.
