Moss Island was designated as a
National Natural Landmark in 1976. Although it's not technically a true island, it's claim to fame is the large glacial potholes that were formed in the rock during the melting of the last ice age due to gritty water swirling like toilet water on these rocks for thousands of years, which basically bored large smooth holes into the bedrock like a drill.
If you're up for some exploring, the North side of this island is where you'll find an abundance of these potholes, but PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HOLD YOUR CHILDREN'S HANDS while you're navigating these deep potholes. There are plenty of dangerous crevices that can result in tragic fall of 15-20 feet, and the grounds of wet moss & leaves can make the edges slippery.
