In the line of duty
Gladys Elphick Park / Narnungga (Park 25) underwent many changes in 2019, during the same period as the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) was built near the corner of North Terrace and West Terrace. The ovals here have new facilities, with updated parking, walking and cycling trails.
The monument here in Gladys Elphick Park is a South Australian Railways Memorial to 'The Great War'. It is dedicated to the railway workers who have died in the line of duty. This memorial is in memory of those who fell, who gave up their lives for us who remain.
The plaque reads: In memory of those who fell. These laid the world away poured out the red sweet wine of youth gave up the years to be of work and joy and that unhoped serene that men call age.
