Geocache Description:

NCGO @ Jordan Lake Community Celebration Event CITO - Sunday, 20 March 2022, 1:00 - 4:00pm                           (please note the different time. This area has no hunting on Sunday.)

History:   NGCO has been doing CITOs at Jordan Lake for 10 years now so this one is a Community Celebration of 20 (+2) years for geocaching as well the 10th anniversary of NCGO's involvement in the Clean Jordan Lake initiative. On April 15, 2012, 55 volunteer cachers joined forces to remove 61 bags of trash as well as 11 tires. In the 10 year history 490 NCGO volunteers have removed 1207 bags and 299 tires!! There are now around 30 groups participating in trash clean up along the shores of Lake Jordan. Consistently NCGO volunteers have topped the list for volume of trash collected annually.

Cache In Trash Out® (CITO) is an environmental initiative supported by the entire geocaching community. Since 2002, CITO has helped preserve the natural beauty of cache-friendly spaces. In that time, there have been more than 502,000 logged attendances at more than 26,000 events where geocachers helped improve the outdoors. On Sunday, March 20, we can give a little back to our community and environment.

The Plan:  We will be meeting at the posted coordinates at 1:00PM on 3/20/2022 for refreshments and door prizes for attendance. There will be a group picture before the hike to the branch trailhead down to the cleanup area. The area is gamelands and is undeveloped. Keep this in mind and dress appropriately for a woods hike. Be sure to bring water. Hiking boots and long pants are encouraged. Bug spray, too.

We will be spending approximately 2-3 hours picking up trash. Gathering back in the parking area at 4PM there will be additional refreshments and some prizes for such things at the most unusual piece of trash or the largest variety of sport balls. Special prize for anyone finding a bowling ball but you must bring that ball back to parking.

Clean Jordan Lake will provide trash bags, grabbers and gloves. If you would rather wear your own work gloves, please feel free to bring them but gloves are required.

While we are partnering with Clean Jordan Lake we need to follow their established guidelines:

  • Sign a liability waiver form for each participant (this may require parent/guardian signature if participant is a minor). We will have forms at the event. Or you can complete an online waiver in advance at https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/volunteer-waiver
  • Obey safety precautions such as wear closed toe shoes, gloves, long pants, long sleeve shirt and hat (these are all to avoid cuts, ticks, chiggers and poison ivy)
  • Everyone participating in the event must wear gloves. If you do not bring your own work gloves they will be provided for you.
  • Clean Jordan Lake stipulates a minimum age of 11 for all participants.

This CITO is sponsored by the North Carolina Geocaching Organization (NCGO).
