Let's celebrate Blue Switch Day and 22 years of geocaching! Bonus: earn the rare Community Celebration Event icon and the 2022 Blue Switch Day souvenir.
Meet at Ruby Tuesday, 260 Underwood Road in Fletcher, NC, beginning at 6 pm and ending about 8 pm. You can just pop in and sign the log if necessary, but this will not be your run-of-the-mill "meet, greet, and eat" event, so stick around for the festivities. Or, if you don't want to eat, just come around 7 pm.
Although it is not required to purchase anything, the first hour will be for socializing and eating (if you choose). Then at 7 pm the fun begins! There will be LOTS of games and prizes, so bring the whole family.
Hint: bring your usual caching bag and review your stats. Dust off your favorite caching memories and polish up your caching skills. There are prizes to be won...
New to the game or you're a muggle or a non-caching spouse? No problem! Come prepared to learn and to meet new geocaching friends.
Referred to as the flipping of the “Big Blue Switch," on May 2, 2000 the U.S government discontinued its use of GPS Selective Availability, making precise accuracy of GPS technology available to the public rather than just to military users. Suddenly GPS coordinates could be pinpointed to 30 feet or less compared to the previous 100 feet or more of accuracy . The very next day, computer/GPS geek Dave Ulmer decided to test that accuracy by hiding a black bucket in the woods near Portland, Oregon. He posted the GPS coordinates on a computer bulletin board along with a challenge to go find it. And thus geocaching was born.
