Yeah, good friends, good beer, good food, and a souvenir are cool, and who knows, there might even be a raffle.
But after we're fully hydrated, fed, and socialized, let's take a bit of time and think about trails.
Here in the Conejo Valley (OK, the Greater Conejo Valley, gotta include the surrounding mountains you know), we are fortunate to have miles upon miles of trails. And as we head out into the Open Space, we have an abundant selection.
From trails that can easily be enjoyed by youngsters and seniors, to those that will provide a technical challenge to the experienced hiker, and everything in between. From trails that can be hiked in half an hour to trails that require a half day commitment. From trails that provide panoramic views to trails that wind through deep and shaded canyons alongside seasonal and sometimes permanent creeks. In short, there's a trail for everyone.
Now there's probably not a cacher around our area who hasn't enjoyed spending time on any number of these trails. And in doing so, you've probably made note of good aspects of them, noticed problem areas, and even thought of some things could be improved.
So, having said that, I'm going to set aside the last half hour or so of this event to conduct a brain-storming session with as many attendees as would like to participate. The intent will be to toss around ideas of ways that we cachers might, either as a group or individually, help give back to the community that has created and maintained the trails we love. This session will include members of the caching community who are already involved in such efforts and who can answer questions as to what sorts of opportunities are already available. Additionally, they may well be able to offer comments regarding any items raised during the session that have been considered in the past but not implemented.
Again, there will be no pressure to participate in this brain-storming session, but I certainly encourage you to consider it.
