We were quite honored to have been one of only a few picked nationwide in the early part of 2020 to host a Community Celebration Event and had originally planned to host it on May 2, Blue Switch Day, but long before that all events were shut down due to Covid. The County of Delta Health Dept. just recently released new guidelines and outdoor events now have no limit on attendance. We met yesterday with the Western Slope GCCO Coordinators, Todd and Sherrie King and feel that now is as good a time as ever to host this event. May 2nd of last year was the 20th Anniversary of GeoCaching and was the target date for the Event. Well, May 2 of THIS YEAR is when GeoCaching becomes 21 years of age, thus the Event Title, COMING OF AGE!
The event will be held in the Lions Pavilion at Confluence Park in Delta, right near Ft. Uncompaghre, all of which is WELL MARKED along the highway. You will be requested to wear a mask while inside the open air pavilion. The bulk of the Event will happen in the first 30 - 45 minutes (Drawings, giveaways, etc) and as always Team kekj will be providing each guest with a bag of goodies that include a stack of different sized water proof log papers, log rollers, micro caches, etc as well as the sale of current and recent GCCO geocoins. After the formalities are done it will become more of a meet and greet, come and go. We are going to publish the event in the local paper and hope to have a few newbies in attendance, getting to know them and extoling the fun of geocaching will be good PR for the game.
This Event is part of a limited release of Community Celebration Events to celebrate 20 years of geocaching. Originally scheduled for 2020, due to Covid geocachers now have until December 31, 2021 to host an event. Learn more about Community Celebration Events on the Geocaching Blog. A SOUVINER COMES WITH LOGGING THE EVENT!
P.S. NOTES SINCE PUBLISHED! Thanks to the speed of our good (Madam madman) reviewer, this was published in record time! KUDOs for HIS/her? assistance in adjusting dates within guidelines.
Have contacted the local newspaper and they are supportive and excited enough that they are sending out a reporter to do an article next week! Anticipate that we will also include a blip and photo of the Mars Perseverance Rover TB to appeal to the techies of the now generation!
WE ARE OPEN to having the event scheduled at an earlier time but the current time frame allows those who have a work schedule for that day to make it down even from Grand Junction, Montrose, or further afield. We would ask that ANYONE INTERESTED please post in your log that:
A. the time frame works well B. The time frame works but you would prefer it at 4:xx or 5.xx C. Interested but can only come at T +.xx Based on that feedback we will do what works best for everyone and get it nailed down asap so that it is correctly stated in the newspaper. Keep in mind that while the event will last for two hours, we will only require that you be there for the main portion of the event which is anticipated to be around 1 hr. but hopefully you will get involved with newbies and other geocachers such that we have to chase you out at the end. As we do understand the rural distances involved, along with milking cows and feeding cattle, late arrivals will be accepted and allowed to log the event but keep in mind that you will likely miss out on the most fun part of the event - door prizes!
Weather by this date will be fairly warm, even in late evening, AND we will be hosting the bulk of the event on the WEST EXTERIOR of the pavilion where we will get good exposure to the last rays of the days sunlight. Note that "exterior" vs "inside" is a key word to those who have "breathing issues" while wearing a mask. Team kekj is fully vaccinated so we will likely not be wearing a mask while out in the open and speaking but we do plan to maintain social distancing for the duration and for the protection of others. WE also plan on being masked up if inside the pavilion setting across the table from someone else. Attached you will find screen shots of the local Public Health Depts.’ current rules on attendance numbers showing that we are fully eligible for this OUTDOOR PUBLIC EVENT.
