Taipei Machinery Bureau /

Taiwan's first governor, Liu Mingchuan, built the “Machinery Bureau” outside the north gate of Taipei wall in 1885. It should be the first
modernization factory in Taiwan, and he also hired foreigners to supervise the factory, mainly for making gun bullets and repairing guns. In 1892, the Machinery Bureau set up coin-casting machines and began to mint coins. Meanwhile, the Machinery Bureau  also having the management of the railway maintenance and logging bureaus. The Machinery Bureau was changed into the "Taipei Weapons Repair Center" in the early days of Japanese rule, which was for repairing the weapons of the army and manufacturing various cannonball pellets and pods.

In 1900, the artillery factory was transferred to the Ministry of Railways. The south side was the office area and the north side was the Taipei Railway Factory, which was used to repair the railway-related components. In 1909, the Ministry of Railways expanded to the east, and the first phase of the Ministry of Railways Building was completed in May 1918, replacing the originally used gate of the Qing Dynasty Machinery Bureau and being used by the various departments of the Ministry of Railways. In the 1930s, the original building of the Machinery Bureau was demolished and converted into other buildings and railway dormitories.

At the end of 2006, for the construction of the Taipei MRT Songshan Line, some relics of the Machinery Bureau were discovered during site preparation, and the MRT construction wassuspended temporarily. After that, it took more than a year for excavation and investigation. The slate road found in the Qing Dynasty was only seen in Taipei. It was made of long slabs and cobblestones. The quadruple structure of the Machinery Bureau and the east wall witnessed the development of modernization in Taiwan. The MRT Bureau later modified the entrance and exit positions of Beimen Station, and displayed some remains and other excavated items in Beimen Station.
