Geocache Description:

A small cache in front of the rest area. Accessible from either side of the fence.

Grass Lake was once a picturesque permanent body of water in Northern California. The same wealthy Mr. Weed who built a hotel in Dunsmuir and a large lumber mill in the City of Weed named after him, also built a 32-room resort and hotel on beautiful Grass Lake in 1903, which became a stage stop and later a railroad stop. He extended a logging railroad up this way to feed his mill. This later became the route of the Espee Cascade Line

A guy named James Murphy, who may have worked for the railroad, set off some dynamite in Grass Lake. Why he did this is not known. This fractured the bedrock above a lava tube which ran underneath the lake, which quickly drained out its contents. You can still see where this occurred.

The hotel and resort declined quickly afterward. Now it is only a wetlands for birds using the Pacific Flyway.
