Danson Park is a public park located between Welling and Bexleyheath. At 75 hectares, it is the second largest public park in the borough (the largest being Foots Cray Meadows at 100 hectares), and the most used by the community. Opened in 1925, it is often considered the finest green open space in the borough.
It provides a large number of facilities. Further details can be found at GC8P3HN
The largest body of open water within Bexley is Danson Park reservoir, which is located on a tributary of the River Shuttle, in the centre of the Borough. The reservoir receives discharge from the local surface water drainage network. The capacity of the reservoir was reduced in the years following the Second World War as building rubble was deposited in the lake, however it remains sufficient to facilitate recreational water sport activities and water levels are maintained at a consistently high level to enable this.
The crest of Danson Dam runs parallel with Danson Road and stands in the order of 7 to 8m higher than the road. The reservoir is drained through a chamber built into the dam wall which collects water and routes it into a culvert which routes flow into the River Shuttle. This path follows the natural low point in the topography and as such reflects the potential flow route of flood waters should the integrity of the dam be compromised. An overflow spillway is built into the dam structure and is designed to be effective when the water levels in the dam reach a critical level so as to avoid structural damage to the dam wall.
