There was a cache here planted here in 2007 by Tramper 2 who is no longer with us .
I found it years ago ...and I believe it is a historic site worth remembering and so I am reinstating it .
I am using information from the original cache in my description.
( Many of you may know more about this than I do but here goes: )
On Feb 7th 1863 the HMS Oprheus; A Royal Navy 21 gun steam Corvette hit a sand bar and foundered at the Manukau Harbour Entrance .
This has been called New Zealand's worst Maritime Disaster....
It was bound for Onehunga from Sydney to take up duties in NZ..
Apparently the blunder was caused by navigation problems due to out of date maps..
The ship hit the middle bank and was stuck firmly. .
Huge waves were soon breaking over the ship...and 189 people lost their lives trying to escape.
Out of a crew of 256 only 69 were saved.
This tragedy is the subject of many art works .
This cache is near the Grave of Three Unknown Sailors.
To find this cache ,drive down Cornwallis Rd road till you come to a short curved crescent road on your right
where you may park.
You will see a sign ;" Orpheus Graves Walk " leading to the graves .
It is only a few minutes walk from there . Please use the shoe cleaning station to help minimise Kauri Dieback Disease.
Please also respect the graves here ... If you stand at the opening of the picket fence and look towards the sea , the caches is not far away ...Look under some hunks of concrete near base of a big tree.
